An Arteriovenous (AV) Fistula is universally recognized as the gold standard vascular access for hemodialysis. Frequently referred to as the patient's "lifeline", preserving fistula patency demands rigorous daily vigilance.

The Daily "Feel and Listen" Check

Every morning and evening, patients or caregivers should gently touch the access site to feel for the characteristic vibration (the "thrill") and listen for the rhythmic whooshing sound (the "bruit"). Any absence or marked weakening of this sensation necessitates urgent clinical attention.

Golden Rules of Fistula Protection

  1. No Blood Pressure or IVs: Never permit BP cuffs, needle punctures, or blood draws on the fistula arm.
  2. Avoid Constriction: Wear loose sleeves; do not carry heavy shopping bags or sleep resting on the access arm.
  3. Puncture Site Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry, especially in the 6 hours immediately following needle withdrawal post-dialysis.
